One of the hardest things I did on the journey from being a realist pencil artist to a more intuitive one, was painting free. No reference, no solid concept and using flowing materials only. Scary as it was, it felt like this is the way ideas and answers are shaped in the brain. Pigment floating on the surface before settling down, water or paper grain interrupting the flow sometimes, creating shapes you hadn’t anticipated. And afterwards, the constant doubt, is it good enough and what did I do? It all felt surprisingly organic and real.
